Do it yourself or hire professional movers? Probably this is the most important decision you’ll have to make. Hiring professional movers means that someone else does most –or all- of the work. Doing it yourself means that the burden falls on you and any friends you can round up. Hiring professional movers means paying for all those services; doing it yourself means saving some money. And, of course, there is that middle ground, if you hire professional movers and you do some of the packing yourself. You should ask the mover whether or not items that you pack are covered by the insurance. (your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover damage incurred during a move).
If you hire professional movers and choose the option to pack some of the items yourself, the moving crew would load them in the truck for you. However, for certain items like glass or fragile items, is better to let the experienced movers take care of your belongings professionally. You can start packing things that you don’t need on a daily basis like non-seasonal clothing or garage items that are easy to pack in boxes. As a reminder, small boxes for heavy items such as tools or books, and big boxes for light weight items such as bulky bed covers, pillows, clothing or desk items. Also, don’t forget to label the boxes!
If you have pets or plants, make arrangements for them as well. Movers aren’t allowed to transport pets. Get a pet carrier so that they can be transported in their cages. Plan well ahead for fish, they’ll need a spill-proof container and perhaps a battery-operated aerator. For plants, if the mover handles it, (most won’t) transfer them into non-breakable containers. Prune them a couple of weeks before the move. The day before the move pack them in boxes with air holes.
Finally, pack the loose kitchen items last. As the moving day approaches, start living out the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. Don’t restock unless you have to- there’s no point in paying to move something you can get for the same price in your new town. When the fridge and shelves are empty, eat microwavable meals or eat out.
